For more than 60 years, OCTE has offered quality professional development programs for teachers of English and language arts. 

Your OCTE membership

  • creates access to NCTE-regional and national conferences, committees, programs
  • reduces registration fee at OCTE in-service conferences
  • creates access to three NCTE student writing and publishing competitions:
    • PRESLM (Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines)
    • NCTE Achievement Awards (scholarships for 11th grade Oregon students)
    • NCTE Promising Young Writers (recognition for 8th grade Oregon students)
  • underwrites various literacy institutes
  • co-sponsors the statewide Oregon Writing Festival with the Graduate School of Education at Portland State University
  • provides a free subscription to Chalkboard—the OCTE newsletter
  • provides a free subscription to the Oregon English Journal
  • sponsors the Oregon Literature Series—the six-volume anthology from OSU Press
  • funds the Oregon Excellence Awards in Teaching English Language Arts, the only statewide recognition program for our subject area
  • funds research grants to English language arts classroom teachers
  • funds the statewide "Teachers and Students as Writers" competition and anthology
