2010 Spring Conference

Fabulous, fun, practical, and affordable OCTE Spring Conference in Seaside
April 16 and 17
Plan now to attend!

As Geoffrey Chaucer would say, “Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote....”   Yes, it was in April when Chaucer and his merry band of pilgrims decided that it was time to get out of the house and head for Canterbury.  It’s a pretty good time to head for Seaside, too.

More Details

The conference begins Friday at 3:15 at Seaside High School.   Arrive on Friday and you’ll be eligible for a drawing following Saturday’s keynote address.  Prizes include dinner at Dooger’s, a guided kayak trip, gift certificates from the Cannon Beach Book Company and Beach Books in Seaside, and more.

At 7:15 p.m. Oregon’s Poet Laureate, Lawson Inada, will share original work accompanied by live music in the Seaside High School Library.  Lawson, of course, is one of our state’s greatest treasures.  He’s been recognized nationally for his literary accomplishments and humanitarian causes.  Come to Lawson’s presentation Friday evening and you’ll see why his humor and love of language are infectious.

Join Lawson again the following morning next to the estuary for the Blueberry Poem Feed.  Lawson will read some of his work and invite everyone to share one of his/her favorite poems, original or otherwise.  We’ll savor language and pancakes while we watch the first rays of sunlight dance across the placid estuary and gentle Pacific.  Occasionally, we experience rain on the North Coast in mid-April, but the Blueberry Pancake Feed will go on, rain or shine.  Look for the white canopies next to the water.  If you’re not hearty enough to endure a little Oregon rain, you might want to consider joining the California Council of Teachers of English.

Breakout sessions will follow the Poem Feed.   Slots are beginning to fill, but if you have an idea for a presentation, let us know and we’ll find a place for you.

Following the breakout sessions, Bob Dandoy will deliver the keynote address. Bob is the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English.  A retired high school English teacher and popular NCTE presenter, he now teaches English at Slippery Rock University.  His speech is titled, “Monday Morning Usefulness: Practical Activities and Strategies for Teaching Literacy.”
