Why Attend?
The conference begins Friday at 3:15 at Seaside High School. Arrive on Friday and you’ll be eligible for a drawing following Saturday’s keynote address. Prizes include dinner at Dooger’s, a guided kayak trip, gift certificates from the Cannon Beach Book Company and Beach Books in Seaside, and more. At 7:15 p.m. Oregon’s Poet Laureate, Lawson Inada, will share original work accompanied by live music in the Seaside High School Library. Lawson, of course, is one of our state’s greatest treasures. He’s been recognized nationally for his literary accomplishments and humanitarian causes. Come to Lawson’s presentation Friday evening and you’ll see why his humor and love of language are infectious. Join Lawson again the following morning next to the estuary for the Blueberry Poem Feed. Lawson will read some of his work and invite everyone to share one of his/her favorite poems, original or otherwise. We’ll savor language and pancakes while we watch the first rays of sunlight dance across the placid estuary and gentle Pacific. Occasionally, we experience rain on the North Coast in mid-April, but the Blueberry Pancake Feed will go on, rain or shine. Look for the white canopies next to the water. If you’re not hearty enough to endure a little Oregon rain, you might want to consider joining the California Council of Teachers of English.
The Ocean View Resort in Seaside is providing special rates for OCTE members. Call (800) 234-8439 and ask for OCTE conference rates.
Registration Costs OCTE Members $60, non-members $70, Full-time students and Retirees $30
Call for program proposals: Do you have an idea for a presentation? An instructional model you’ve developed? Strategies that have worked well in your classroom? Presenting at an OCTE conference is an excellent way to share your expertise, to meet other English Language Arts teachers, and to help shape the future of our organization and our profession. Submit your program proposal today. Click here for proposal form (pdf)
