2011 Shortlist Announced

The Oregon Spirit Book Award committee has chosen a short list of books being considered for the 2011 book awards.  Winners will be announced in June, and authors will receive their awards at the OCTE Fall Conference on October 6, 2012, at Wilsonville High School.

Children’s: 
Bandits by Johanna Wright, The Big Wish by Carolyn Conahan, Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox by Susan Blackaby, and Charlotte Jane Battles Bedtime by Myra Wolfe.

Middle Reader:  Between Two Ends by David Ward, Second Fiddle by Rosanne Parry, Storm Runners by Roland Smith, Vanishing Acts by Phillip Margolin and Ami Margolin Rome, and Wildwood: The Wildwood Chronicles, Book I, by Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis.

Young Adult: Amplified by Tara Kelly, Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, Putting Makeup on Dead People by Jen Violi, and Recovery Road by Blake Nelson.

Non-fiction:  For the Love of Music: The Remarkable Story of Maria Anna Mozart by Elizabeth Rusch, Drawing from Memory by Allen Say, Magic Trash by Jane Shapiro, and The Voyage of Turtle Rex by Kurt Cyrus.

This year, the committee considered 67 books in the categories of Children’s, Middle Reader, Young Adult, Graphic Novels, and Non-fiction.  The awards are given to Oregon authors who make “a distinguished contribution to children’s literature or young adult literature that engage and encourage readers’ imagination, discovery, and understanding, reflecting the spirit and values held by Oregonians.”

About the Oregon Spirit Book Award

The Oregon Spirit Book Award is awarded yearly to the author of a distinguished contribution to children’s literature or young adult literature that engages and encourages readers’ imagination, discovery, and understanding, reflecting the spirit and values held by Oregonians.  Priority to texts that present:

  • Respectful portrayals of diverse populations
  • Tolerance of various individual and cultural perspectives
  • Peaceful, innovative, and equitable solutions of conflicts
  • Respect for ecosystems and environmental sustainability

Eligibility:

  • Books published in the U.S. in a calendar year, January to December are eligible for the award the following year. (Self-published books will not be considered.)
  • Oregon author.
  • All formats of books are eligible: picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, and electronic books.
  • Both fiction and nonfiction in any genre.
  • English is one of the languages.
  • There may be up to three awards each year, maximum of one winner from each of three categories as follows:

Children’s (PK-grade 3) 
Middle Reader (grades 4-7) 
Young Adult (grades 8-12)
In addition, up to two honor books may be named in each category. 

If submissions warrant, special category winners may be designated in other genres such as nonfiction or graphic novels.

Note that there may be some overlap in age/grade categories.
